Pitman’s Book of the Austin Seven

Quite evocative to find this little book – the only one so far which actually gives a good layman’s description of what things actually do, like the different settings on the ignition switch. Back in 1960 this was probably bought from Halfords for a first car – from the pencil notes, living in a flat, TPF&T insurance – and a rigorous list of what recommended to do to keep the damn thing going. Interesting too seeing exactly which pages have oil and grease on. Those desparate days.

  1. The earlier editions by Goodwin are far better and more detailed. Not too uncommon. They pop up on Ebay from time to time. Editions run from 1935 thro’ to 1939.
