65 gearbox markings

Gerald Flockhart reports on a 65, body number 59. The gearbox is a proper 4 speed close ratio crash box but it doesn’t have an “S” stamped on the rear, instead it’s marked x85x which is carried over to the lid as well. He was working on the rad shell and noticed that it was also stamped 85 on the base.
Has anyone seen anything similar on other early 65s? And why would the gearbox determine matches for other parts rather than the body number?
